How is Mattel getting away with the terrible quality on these figures?

I've love the original 8' WGSH and other lines and have been really interested to see the directions different companies have gone trying to re-make (or make new) lines based on classic Megos.

What's been EXTREMELY disappointing is the terrible quality Mattel has hoisted on the market with these figures.

I'm not talking about aesthetic choices – which I can live with (although whoever thinks Batman is supposed to be wearing a thong wasn’t paying attention)

What I can’t abide is the terrible bodies, oversized boots, and cheap outfits that fray and emblems that crack right out of the box making this line a real disappointment, *again*. I’m not talking about some unachievable standard that fans may have for a “retro” line, I’m talking about basic product quality that even SMALL companies have been able to achieve with their 8in lines.

These toys PALE in comparison to what EMCE, Biff-Bang-Pow and Castaway toys have been able to do on their *own*. The Trek, Apes, Phantom, Flash Gordon, etc. etc. are MILES ahead.

It really makes me sad that a company like Mattel can get this SO wrong. If they are going to continue to make them like this I wish they would stop.

Mattel is a big company with vast resources. While I may not like a certain design aspect of the toys that's not the issue. I own no rights to Batman and I get 0 say in what his cowl looks like.

But make no mistake - Mattel is NOT putting out a quality product. They are putting out an inferior product, with a badly designed body, which is being assembled poorly. They are using inferior materials that aren't holding up to a gentile collector’s touch let alone kids play, and producing ill-fitting accessories that don't do justice to the characters.

Then they raise the price, and I have to go spend another $10 on a “boutique” body and another $5 - $10 on accessories just to get a figure that STANDS PROPERLY.

Mattel is producing crap and doesn't appear to care. Their answers to the questions are typical PR spin and don’t address the core problems.

I don't care how hard it is to make a running change. They should delay the line until they fix the issues not continue shipping junk.

What’s sad is that if this line fails, they will likely blame fickle collectors or a soft market for “retro” lines, instead of looking inward and realizing they had a chance to make something great and botched it so terribly with a bad product.

Sad, but mostly true. Maybe we'll be surprised and Mattel will fix these "basic" problems before it's too late.

Mattel, please stop making articulated copies of the original MOTU toys as a rule and only use old elements that still hold up to today's standards.

Mattel is nuts to think they are not going to alienate their fan base but keeping this lackluster body. Change it ASAP!

I'm confused by what you mean when you say to change the body. Do you want it resculpted or restrung so that it stands and holds a kick out to the side pose on its own properly.
If you are referring to the sculpt, good luck. If you are referring to the poseability issues with wave 1 how can you tell whether this has been addressed or not by looking at packaged photos.

BOTH things need to happen. You can tell the bodies are strung just as badly by looking at the pictures of the cards released on facebook - Batman is bow-legged, etc. And Retro Robin just posted a review confirming it.

Mattel needs to halt the line and re-engineer the bodies, or just use Doc Mego's body since they partner with EMCE on consulting on the line. The bodies are terrible, it's obvious, and Mattel needs to step up and fix it.

A Mattel Spokes representative Wrote in ToyFare a Few Issues back, basically how crapy the Mego Body was, and Fantastic thier New Body ..., and well line was. Smiler

I wish I could remember that Guys Name, and Issue it was in. Obviously someone's commenting , perhaps where He should not. My 5 Mego Supermen Have red Underwear ( Not Pink ) Emblems that are not Cracked and Smeared, No Snages, and all Can Stand.

All of my numerous Supermen have pink undies, cracked emblems, and not one of these retro bodies can stand. This is a given....see the hundred of posts regarding these production issues. This line is as crappy as can be....whether you are a mego fan or an average consumer.

The original Mego bodies were far superior in both design, proportion and function, as are the current repros by other companies. I realize there may be reasons Mattel can't use the Doc Mego body because their safety standards may be different, but the bodies they made are pathetic, and far inferior to something made 30 years ago.

Although the stooping bodies just presentation-wise are bad enough, its the headsculpts that bother me. They are very amateurly done, like bad customs or something. I laughed at the sight of the new Shazam and Black Adam heads. The original main sculptor for Mego, can't remember his name now, was a fantastic and professional sculptor, only limited by the tooling and casting technology of the time -- but he wasn't blind. He knew his facial anatomy and was no doubt classically trained as most in those days were (unlike the kitbashers turned "professional" nowadays). Mattel has really missed the mark on these I think and pretty much made a farce out of what collectors still like about the old Megos.

Emerald...you are soo completetly on the money. The sculptors selected by Emcee are just not working out. Shazaam's sculpt is strange. Wonder Woman looks like a bug eyed floozy. The Flash needs a serious nose job as does Black Adam. Emcee reps insist it is camera angles which make the figures look bad....right. As for the....these are just prototypes story...see every other figure produced thus far. What you see is unfortunately what you get in this line. DC reps should request better likenesses for their characters. Mattel wake up and smell the stench of the oily BP residue all over this line.

Kinda off topic here but since other mego-like figures are mentioned I thought I would ask if anyone out there knows anything about Zica toys?
They showed off head sculpts of Buck Rogers back in 11-09, and I have not seen these figures released. They look spot on and was wondering if these are ever going to see the light of day? Talk about dead on likeness.

Well, that's YOUR opinion. Stop spouting it as fact.
I happen to love these figures, have all nine of them so far, and have had no problems whatsoever. I think the Mattel bodies are just fine.
